Australian organisations advocating for long-term thinking in Australian policymaking.

The Intergenerational Fairness Coalition is proud to support the For Our Future Campaign, which is inviting Australians to ‘Ask for the Bill’.

By asking for the Bill, this campaign is calling for support of the Wellbeing of Future Generations Bill, introduced into Australian Federal Parliament in February 2025.

This proposed legislation would ensure that Australian leaders are supported and held accountable for considering the long-term consequences of their decisions on current and future generations.

Our Vision

A brighter future for all Australians, where long-term thinking, sustainability and equality are front of mind. We believe in the potential of pragmatic and economically-minded approaches to safeguarding Australia's future by addressing long-standing and emerging challenges.

We believe that recognising and honouring the sacred 65,000-year history and present-day leadership of First Nations Peoples and cultures across the land we know as Australia today is essential to realising our vision and embracing the potential of our shared future.

Coalition Members

Our collective mission is to see an intergenerational lens embedded in Australian policymaking, supported by meaningful intergenerational engagement, data-driven measurement and accountability mechanisms.

We Believe

Australia's future wellbeing requires government to prioritise intergenerational fairness and embed long-term thinking in all policymaking.

Driving this change requires collaboration across sectors, communities, and the political spectrum.

Intergenerational fairness demands unity, not division: it is a call for shared stewardship of Australia's future, rooted in solidarity across generations.

In addition to nurturing this Ambitious Vision, we support:

How We Define Success

01

The Advancement of Existing Initiatives: We will collaborate with and strengthen existing initiatives that build momentum towards intergenerational fairness, promoting shared values and common ground wherever possible.

Enshrining long-term thinking and intergenerational fairness into leadership, policymaking, and governance across Australia.

Our current and primary reform proposal is to champion the Wellbeing of Future Generations Act, which would:

  • Introduce a Federal Legislative Framework to embed the wellbeing of future generations into decision-making processes;

  • Establish a Positive Duty requiring policymakers to consider the interests of future generations in all government actions;

  • Create an Independent Commissioner for Future Generations to advocate for Australia’s long-term interests and sustainable practice; and

Launch a National Conversation on current and Future Generations to engage Australians in shaping a collective, future-focused national vision.

Investing in Complementary Efforts: We will pursue complementary initiatives to safeguard Australia's future, such as enhancing the Intergenerational Report, advocating for a Future Generations Budget Statement, and embedding intergenerational impact considerations into government decision-making frameworks.

Joint Action & Advocacy

  • A Path to the Summit of the Future: Open Letter

    The United Nations Summit of the Future, due to take place in September 2024, is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to enhance global cooperation and reimagine our international system to meet the demands of the 21st century.

    In response to this opportunity, the Intergenerational Fairness Coalition came together to craft an open letter to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and several other key Ministerial offices.

  • Intergenerational Analysis of the Federal Budget

    ‘Through the Eyes of a Child Born on Budget Night’: In response to the Federal Budget, EveryGen led an analysis of its implications through the eyes of a child born on budget night. This analysis covers deep dives into the budget measure and its relationship to the five major forces in the Intergenerational Report 2023, the Measuring What Matters Framework, and questions set out by the Welsh Government to assess the intergenerational implications of policy.
